Automatic Open-Close or Automatic Opening? How Umbrella Mechanisms Work

The term “automatic umbrella” appears straightforward. In practice, it describes different mechanisms. Some umbrellas open and close the canopy at the press of a button. Others open automatically but are closed by hand.

This distinction matters. Following the intended sequence prevents unnecessary strain on the mechanism, shaft and frame.

What Happens When an Umbrella Opens

Several components move together beneath the canopy. The runner travels along the shaft and uses supporting ribs to raise the main ribs. At the same time, the fabric panels unfold and are placed under tension.

In an automatic umbrella, part of this movement is triggered by a preloaded spring. The button releases the mechanism. This does not mean that every subsequent step happens automatically too.

It is therefore important to distinguish between automatic open-close and automatic-opening mechanisms.

Automatic Open-Close Folding Umbrellas

The Sapor Essential and Iconic use automatic open-close mechanisms. The button opens the canopy and closes it again.

Before opening, gently shake the closed umbrella so that the fabric and ribs can unfold freely. The canopy should then be opened exclusively with the button. Pushing it further by hand is neither necessary nor advisable.

When the button is pressed again, the canopy folds automatically. The telescopic shaft remains extended. It must then be pushed towards the handle in a controlled manner until it locks fully and audibly into place.

Only after this engagement is the mechanism tensioned for the next opening. Pressing the button repeatedly or attempting to reopen the umbrella before the shaft has been fully compressed interrupts the intended sequence.

Automatic-Opening Stick Umbrellas

The Sapor Classic, Modern and Distinct use automatic-opening mechanisms. The canopy opens at the press of a button but is closed by hand.

To close the umbrella, guide the runner evenly along the shaft towards the handle until the mechanism engages. The movement should remain controlled. Pulling sharply on the fabric or applying one-sided pressure to individual ribs places unnecessary strain on the frame.

The same applies when opening: the button initiates the complete intended movement. The canopy should not be pushed further upwards by hand.

Why the Mechanisms Differ

A folding umbrella must shorten to a compact format. Its shaft therefore consists of several telescopic sections. An automatic open-close mechanism supports the rapid opening and closing of the canopy, while the shaft is subsequently compressed by hand.

A stick umbrella has a continuous shaft and does not need to collapse to bag size. Automatic opening raises the canopy, while manual closing allows the runner to be guided evenly and directly.

Neither mechanism is inherently superior. Each follows the construction and intended use of its umbrella.

Sound and Resistance Shape the Experience

A mechanism is experienced through more than function. Button resistance, opening speed and the sound of engagement all influence the impression it creates.

The Sapor Distinct, Classic and Modern include a damper that gives the opening movement a substantial, controlled sound. This acoustic quality is separate from the sound of rain on the canopy. One is produced by the mechanism; the other by fabric, tension and rainfall.

Do Not Apply Additional Force

If an umbrella becomes blocked, behaves unusually or suddenly requires considerably more force, it should not be operated forcibly. The same applies to visibly bent ribs, loose components or damage to the canopy.

Oil, sprays and other lubricants should not be applied without specific guidance. They may spread onto the fabric or handle, attract dirt or affect individual components.

A few photographs or a short video usually help assess unusual operation. For a Sapor umbrella, contact us with the model and, where available, the order number.

A Clear Sequence

An automatic mechanism is intended to simplify use. To function reliably, it should be operated in its intended order.

Automatic open-close: press the button to open, press it to close, then compress the shaft until it locks.

Automatic opening: press the button to open, then guide the runner closed by hand.

Nothing more is required.

Embrace the rain.

How to Recognise a Quality Umbrella: Seven Characteristics

A quality umbrella cannot be judged by one specification alone. What matters is how the frame, canopy, mechanism, handle and closed form work together.
