How to Care for an Umbrella: Seven Simple Principles

A good umbrella requires little maintenance. What matters is not a collection of special products or elaborate treatments, but a few simple habits: allowing it to dry completely, cleaning it carefully, folding it neatly and avoiding unnecessary strain on its mechanism.

These seven principles help protect the canopy, frame, handle and mechanism.

1. Open It Fully Before First Use

Remove the umbrella completely from its sleeve and release the retaining strap. Open it once so that the fabric panels and ribs can unfold freely and evenly.

Slight creases in the canopy are completely normal, particularly with a new folding umbrella. They result from compact storage and will usually soften naturally during use.

There is no need to leave the umbrella open overnight or for 24 hours before using it. Nor does this process need to be repeated several times a year.

2. Allow It to Dry Completely After Rain

The most important care measure begins immediately after use.

Gently shake excess water from the canopy. Do not strike the umbrella against the ground, a wall or another object.

Allow it to dry fully open at normal room temperature. Make sure that the folds, seams and internal areas of fabric are dry as well as the visible surface.

A damp umbrella should not be folded or stored in its sleeve for an extended period. Remaining moisture can cause odours and stains and may affect the fabric and mechanism over time.

Do not attempt to accelerate drying on a heater, with a hairdryer or beside another strong heat source. Even drying at room temperature is gentler on the fabric, coating, handle and mechanism.

3. Clean the Canopy Gently

For light dirt, a soft, damp cloth and clear, lukewarm water are usually sufficient.

Remove loose dirt without pressure before gently wiping the affected area. Do not rub the fabric vigorously or scrub it with a brush. Afterwards, allow the open umbrella to dry completely at room temperature.

Avoid:

• aggressive cleaning agents and stain removers;

• alcohol and solvents;

• hard brushes and abrasive sponges;

• washing machines and dry cleaning;

• submerging the complete umbrella in water.

Dishwashing liquid should not be used unless specifically recommended. With a persistent stain, it is better to ask before treating it than to alter the fabric or its water-repellent finish with an unsuitable product.

4. Do Not Oil the Shaft, Ribs or Joints

If water remains visible on the shaft, ribs or joints after use, wipe it away carefully with a soft, dry cloth.

Do not apply oil, bicycle oil, sprays, lubricants or other care products to the mechanism unless expressly recommended. An unsuitable substance may spread onto the fabric or handle, attract dirt or affect the operation of individual components.

Stiff joints and bent ribs should not be adjusted at home either. If the mechanism behaves unusually, becomes blocked or suddenly requires considerably more force, do not continue operating it forcibly.

A few photographs or a short video will usually help with an initial assessment.

5. Treat Wooden Handles With Restraint

The handles of the Sapor Distinct, Classic and Modern are made from wood. Their grain, tone and fine structure therefore vary from one example to another and may change slightly over time.

A soft, slightly damp cloth is sufficient for cleaning. Dry the handle immediately afterwards.

Avoid alcohol, solvents, aggressive cleaners and abrasive sponges. A wooden handle should not remain in water or be exposed to strong heat.

A subtle change in a natural material is not necessarily a defect. It is part of the character of wood and its use.

6. Fold and Store It Only When Dry

Once the umbrella is completely dry, align the fabric panels along the frame. Wrap the canopy evenly around the shaft without excessive tension.

The retaining strap should hold the fabric securely without compressing it unnecessarily. With a folding umbrella, follow the existing folds rather than twisting the canopy in a new direction.

The supplied sleeve protects a dry umbrella from dirt and unnecessary friction. It is not intended for the long-term storage of a damp umbrella.

Store the umbrella in a dry place at normal room temperature. Avoid:

• damp rooms;

• heaters and strong sources of heat;

• prolonged direct sunlight;

• heavily heated vehicles;

• heavy objects resting on the canopy or frame.

7. Use the Intended Mechanism

Correct operation is also part of care. A mechanism is placed under less unnecessary strain when it is used in its intended sequence and without additional force.

The Sapor Essential and Iconic have an automatic open-and-close mechanism. Before opening, gently shake the closed folding umbrella so that the fabric and ribs can unfold freely. Open and close the canopy exclusively with the button.

After the canopy has closed automatically, push the telescopic shaft towards the handle in a controlled manner until it is fully and audibly locked. Only then is the mechanism ready to open again.

The Distinct, Classic and Modern also open at the press of a button, but are closed manually. Guide the runner evenly towards the handle until the mechanism engages. Do not attempt to push the canopy further open by hand.

If an umbrella does not operate as intended, additional force is not the solution.

What an Umbrella Does Not Need

Some supposed care measures can cause more harm than good. An umbrella should not be:

• folded or stored while damp;

• cleaned in a washing machine;

• treated with aggressive cleaning products;

• oiled or lubricated at home;

• ironed or treated with hot steam;

• forced open or closed;

• repaired by manually bending damaged ribs.

The best care usually consists of altering the material as little as possible and allowing the umbrella to dry completely after use.

If Something Is Not Working Correctly

A blocked or unusually reacting mechanism should not be operated with additional force. The same applies to bent or broken ribs, loose components and visible damage to the canopy.

Do not continue using a damaged umbrella. Instead, contact hello@sapordesign.com and include photographs or a short video if possible. Please also state the model and, where available, your order number.
