Folding Umbrella or Stick Umbrella? Choosing the Right Form

Folding and stick umbrellas are based on the same principle. A canopy opens above a central shaft and creates a moving area of protection. In everyday use, however, the two forms behave very differently.

A folding umbrella is designed to disappear temporarily. A stick umbrella remains visible and is carried as an object in its own right. The appropriate choice therefore depends less on a general hierarchy than on actual use.

The Folding Umbrella: Protection Carried in Reserve

A folding umbrella uses a telescopic shaft to reduce to a compact size. It fits into larger handbags, backpacks, briefcases or luggage and can be carried even when rain is possible rather than certain.

This availability is its greatest strength. The umbrella does not need to remain visible in the hand throughout the day. After use—and once completely dry—it can return to its case.

The compact construction requires more moving connections than a stick umbrella. Telescopic sections, joints and folding ribs must work together during opening and closing.

Essential or Iconic?

The Sapor Essential and Iconic both have a 107-centimetre canopy, a closed length of 32 centimetres and automatic open-close operation. Their main differences lie in construction and expression.

Essential uses eight fibreglass ribs and a compact black handle. It follows the familiar form of a folding umbrella and is available in solid colours and selected patterns.

Iconic uses ten fibreglass ribs and a larger fluted handle. Handle, cotton strap and canopy are colour-matched. Its frame divides the canopy into ten narrower panels and gives the model its characteristic silhouette.

Those looking for a direct and familiar folding umbrella may prefer Essential. Those who want the handle, frame and continuous colour treatment to be more visibly present may be drawn to Iconic.

The Stick Umbrella: An Object That Remains Visible

A stick umbrella does not shorten to bag size. Its shaft remains continuous, its handle visible and its length part of its appearance.

It is therefore carried more consciously. It accompanies the user in the hand, can rest over the forearm when fitted with a curved handle and remains a complete object at home or in the office.

The larger format allows for a generous canopy and a different balance. At the same time, the umbrella remains in the hand even when it is not raining.

Classic, Modern or Distinct?

Classic and Modern share the same basic construction. Both use eight fibreglass ribs, a steel shaft, a 121-centimetre canopy and automatic opening. The difference lies in the handle.

Classic ends in a curved lacquered wooden handle. Its arc allows the umbrella to rest over the forearm and refers to the familiar silhouette of the stick umbrella.

Modern uses a straight wooden handle that continues the line of the shaft. This gives the closed umbrella a reduced, vertical appearance.

Distinct has its own construction with eight reinforced fibreglass ribs, a steel shaft and a curved ironwood handle. Its canopy measures 113 centimetres. Depending on the design, it uses one or two layers of fabric. Limited colour combinations and patterns give it a stronger visual presence.

Understanding Size and Weight

Low weight is not automatically the most important measure of quality. What matters is how weight is distributed and how the umbrella is actually transported.

Essential weighs 423 grams and Iconic 463 grams. Both close to 32 centimetres and can disappear inside a bag.

Classic and Modern are 97 centimetres long. Classic weighs 647 grams and Modern 623 grams. The 92-centimetre Distinct weighs either 509 or 585 grams depending on its fabric construction.

A stick umbrella is therefore larger and heavier, but does not need to fit inside a bag or use a multi-stage telescopic shaft. A folding umbrella is more compact but requires a more complex folding construction.

Five Questions to Guide the Choice

  1. Should the umbrella regularly travel inside a bag?

  2. Will it often be used for commuting or travel?

  3. Is a particularly generous canopy more important than compact dimensions?

  4. Should the handle strongly influence how the umbrella is carried and perceived?

  5. Is the preference for a restrained solid colour or a more distinctive design?

Those who want to carry an umbrella discreetly and in preparation for uncertain weather will often be better served by a folding model. Those who carry the umbrella consciously as an everyday object and prefer a larger format may find a stick umbrella more appropriate.

Different Purposes, Not a Hierarchy

A stick umbrella is not inherently more refined than a folding umbrella. A folding umbrella is not inherently more practical. They answer different needs.

A useful decision therefore does not begin by asking which model is generally best. It begins with everyday life: how will the umbrella be transported, when will it be used and what form should it take while doing so?

Embrace the rain.
